Wet Forces Win in Trigg County

WKDZ is reporting that the Wet/Dry Election has been won by the Wet forces. Of the 10, 339 registered voters 5,294 showed up to vote. The results: 2,665 for & 2,629 against. Most people think that since Trigg County has the 3rd highest unemployment rate in Kentucky at over 16% this played a large factor in the results. Trigg County is home to Lake Barkley State Resort Park and has a large tourism base whereas it borders Lake Barkley. I thought it would be close but I was not sure how the chips would fall. I will be honest and must admit that I was not sure that this would be a good thing for them. I don't know. I do know you can't stop progress and one can only help shape it so it does some good. Legal Liquor in Trigg County-who would of thunk it!!

Its a shame that just over half the voters actually turned out to vote on such a heated issue.

Comment on the comment: Voter apathy is the most disturbing existing condition that I see in the current climate of American politics, along with racism. I agree with the comment, especially when the issue even caught the attention of the Kentucky Ethics League. The best thing is that votes aren't measured in emotional terms. Each vote counts the same. I do not agree that legalizing the sale of alcohol improves the economy of any one area. In Muhlenberg County it nearly ruined the local fraternal organizations, who make large charitable contributions to the community. They have had to be creative to maintain their charity obligations and still keep the doors open. Otherwise, it just makes wealthy people wealthier, without control and protection from the local courthouses. It will be interesting to see WHO gets the sales licenses and how many actually get issued. Herein will lie the rub. With Trigg County being the Kenlake area and the current economic climate of the region (Caldwell County included) being stagnant, maybe the tax dollars coupled with the resort will entice some investment in the local communities. And that is a great big maybe. Princeton couldn't even get the referendum passed in the Country Club/Elks Club precinct. Private clubs need dry territory to survive. My question would be, what now, Gracey? Transfer your licenses? It could happen. The best is yet to come.

I am surprised you lumped racism in with voter apathy. What is disturbing these days is the overuse of the term and the blanket blame that comes along with it. How can that much racism exist? Don't we have a black president now? There will always be a degree of racism and an equal amount of reverse racism in society. Just like there will always be rich and poor, enlightened and unenlighted, and the wet and the dry...
